英國
在獨立學習方面，英國學生要高於我國學生。英國的每個中學生都能夠去圖書館查閱文獻，尋找自己需要的信息來完成一個比較正規的Project。Project的漢語意思是「計劃 」、「設計」、「規化」。實際上類似我國的「科研論文」。英國中學生的Project完全從學生的興趣和社會實際出發，題材極為廣泛。從理化生實驗、數學建模到英國的歷史、地理；從環境保護到關愛生命；從反恐到世界和平；從政治到經濟……，應有盡有。有些Project有理有據，不亞於我國大學生的畢業論文。
英國學生的獨立生活能力也強於我國學生。不分擔家務勞動的學生很少見，他們從小就幫助父母擦汽車、剪草坪。小學生打工的也很多，送報紙是最常見的了，錢雖然掙得不是很多，卻擁有了面對社會、獨立處理問題的機會。到了假期，加油站、快餐店、超市，到處都有中學生在忙著幹活。一個假期下來，不但能掙幾百英鎊，更重要的是他們變得自信、老練。
英國學生的團隊意識強。在英國，人們普遍推崇團隊精神。團隊精神是指一個人與大家協同工作的能力或態度，也就是我們所說的合作能力。英國學校歷來都很重視對學生進行「團隊精神」教育，在公共場所或集體活動中，個人必須服從大家。如果哪個學生為了自己出風頭而連累了大家，他就會被一致斥為「沒有團隊精神」。
英國學生的身體素質好。體育不但是英國中學的重要課程，而且每天下午四點鍾開始，大部分學生又都出現在運動場上。大量的體育鍛煉，加上合理的充足營養，使英國學生大都身強力壯、精力充沛。那種肌肉發達、動作靈活的運動員型學生到處可見。就連女生對體育也十分熱衷。體育好、學習好的學生才備受同學們的推崇。
英國學生的探究精神強。英國學生做事十分開放，敢想敢幹，不受條條框框的束縛，他們認為「只要不被禁止，就可以做」。所以，成功的機會也相對較多。每個學生都有自己的思想和行動。他們不迷信課本、不迷信權威，也不像我國學生那麼關注問題的答案、關注他人的看法。對問題不但有自己的見解，而且特別注重科學論證。注重在探究中尋找答案。
美國
美國的義務教育是六、二、四制，分十二級。一至六年級是小學(primary schoo1)階段，七、八年級是初中(junior school)階段，九至十二年級是高中(senior schoo1)階段。美國各州有各州的教育制度及法律，但各州義務教育的基本原則卻完全相同。
在小學，一個班大約有二十多個人。根據學生的實際狀況，把學生分成幾個小組，各組所使用的教科書及教學進度也不同。全年級雖然同時畢業，但各組所學的東西卻不完全相同，一組所學的東西可能是另外一組的二至三倍。在初中，學生人數也在二十人左右。同一個班的學生只有上自習及導師課(tutorial class)時才在同一個教室，上其它課時因分組及選修課不同，鈴聲一響則各人找各人的教室。他們每個人都有自己的儲藏櫃(1ocker)，平時自己的衣物及書籍就鎖在裡面。
美國學生升入初中後才開始背書包。上小學時，他們的書籍完全放在學校里。小學的課程有閱讀(reading)、算術(arithmetic)、語言(language)、科學(science)和社會科學(social sciences)。另外的音樂、美術和體育則只上課不考試，也不評分。小學成績單上的評分僅用三個英文字母表示，一是G(好)，一是S(滿意)，一是N(需要努力)。初中的課程是數學(mathematics)、英文、科學(為理化及自然等的綜合課)、社會科學、法文(French)。另外的工業藝術、木工、軍事、美術，每樣僅修半學期，體育則不算分。初中成績單用ABCDEFI七個字母表示。A是最好，F是最壞，I是半途而廢。
美國學生的教室寬敞整潔，校舍佔地大，教學設施齊全。美國的教學設施可能是世界第一。無論是在初中還是在小學，都設有室內運動場(indoor sportsground)。
美國兒童上學及放學都有校車(school bus)接送。
美國各級政府的支出占第一位的是教育費用(ecation cost)，其它支出都居次要地位，因此美國學生享受到的是最好的待遇。
